‘Composed Upon Westminster Bridge’ is
one the outstanding creations of William Wordsworth. Here the poet standing on the Westminster Bridge describes the beauty of early morning. The poet loves to
glorify the object of Nature. Here he glorifies the majestic city in the
glittering rays of rising sun. Wordsworth is a lover of solitude. He is
impressed by the deep silence and calm of the city London in the morning. London
in the morning bathed in the light of the rising sun. the poet thinks that
there is nothing more beautiful in the earth than this scene-----
‘’Earth has not anything
to show more fair:
Dull would he be of
soul who could pass by’’
The city of London puts on a
garment of the charming beauty in the morning………
‘’A sight to touching in its majesty:
This City now doth
like a garment wear…’’
Everything in the city of
London was silent and clearly visible. It is free from the dust and smoke which
cover it during the day. A deep calm prevails all around. With a soft murmur, the
river Thames flows on gently without being agitated by the waves caused by the
plying of boats and ships. Ships were anchored, towers, dome, playhouses and
churches lost themselves in the very openness of the distant horizon and the
vast stretches green fields. The city
and the countryside merged and mingled with each other. The busy activities of
the day has not yet started. London in the morning becomes a part of Nature. The
morning sun reveals to the calm London the enchantment of the city.
‘’Dear God! the very houses seem
asleep;
And all that mighty heart is
lying still !’’
The very houses of the city
are asleep. It seems that the heart of a giant is motionless. ‘Mighty heart’ is
an evocative image of the giant city. The poem is remarkable for poetic
achievement.
